Over a 28-year career in public education, Jay taught classes in U.S. History, World Geography, 20th Century Americans as well as Global Awareness.
He has authored Abilene History in Plain Sight, Abilene Stories from Then to Now and Abilene Daily and produces a documentary film series titled, History in Plain Sight, focusing on local history.
Named as one of 12 Outstanding Texas Teachers by Humanities Texas in 2013, Jay has also been recognized by the American Association of State and Local History with their National Award of Merit and by the Taylor County Historical Commission with the Maxine Perini Award. Jay was awarded an honorary doctorate by his alma mater, Hardin-Simmons University, in 2019.
